Swedish Transport Administration

Västlänken (West Link) is one of Sweden’s largest, most complex rail projects. It will transform the future development of Gothenburg, taking existing mainline services and connecting them through a new tunnel below the city centre.

The Gotheburg-based team of Traffikwerket, the Swedish Transport Administration, sought advice on a number of key station planning issues.

We advised on spatial provisions in public areas of stations to ensure passenger safety, comfort and convenience. We prepared guidance on optimum Levels of Service to provide uncongested access to platforms and to avoid congestion at peak periods.

We also advised on space allowances for vertical transport within stations, particularly escalators. Our aim was to give the client and design teams clear guidance on space parameters for the numbers of escalators required by predicted passenger flows. A second key issue was to enable different escalator types to be specified and to permit all leading manufacturers to tender for the project.
