Having used foreign standards for the design and construction of Dubai’s first two metro lines, the Roads & Transport Authority wished to develop their own Rail Planning & Design Guidelines. The RTA appointed Parsons Brinckerhoff as lead consultant and we were responsible for Architecture, Station Planning and Urban Design.
The Guidelines provide planning and design standards for any public transport system running on fixed guideways, developed either by the Government or by private organisations.
Before beginning development of the new design and technical standards, we conducted an extensive piece of research comparing design standards in more than a dozen cities around the world. Our work was therefore benchmarked against international best practice.
We also undertook an evaluation of Dubai’s two existing lines, identifying their successes and where they might be improved.
It became clear that a strategic approach would be most effective, in which well-structured documents were carefully linked with the approval process.
We worked closely with the RTA and the rest of the consultant team to ensure the Guidelines would be well-integrated and meet Dubai’s specific requirements.
